Studio Makeover
6/8/10 AG - Discussion with Ron and Kathy center around need for separate space for production, classes and office. Carpet removal is not a priority for Ron, he has concerns that the sound of our productions will be less appealing. Could support removal with a contingency plan for purchase of large area rug, or being able to put carpet back if the results are not beneficial.
Kathy's wish list for added equipement include
wireless headset mic for director in control room
risers
good lapel mics
colored gels
more lights
quiet fan for warm days
Studio COS
The goal of this project is to upgrade the studio surfaces ( ceiling, floor, walls and curtains ) to conform with industry standards for a general use video production facility. Plan to complete this project by start of fall semester 2010. Design for separate areas for green screen, small productions etc.
Our current sound stage deviates from the norm in a number of key areas:
Walls and Ceiling
Actions:
- Paint all surfaces in the studio with canon ball matte black paint.
Background:
All surfaces should be painted matte black. The needs of a television studio are very similar to that of a theater. The control of light is critical to the success of a video production. Non-blank-matte surfaces will reflect light back into the production. This should be avoided. The best solution is painting all exposed surfaces with a black matte paint. Use canon ball blank.
Floor
Actions:
- Remove carpet.
- Professional clean concrete floor.
- Seal surface.
- Paint the floor with canon ball matte blank.
- Schedule two year floor maintenance.
Background:
Television studio sound stages generally do not have a carpet. Carpets interfere with the smooth operation of cameras and rolling ladders. Carpets reflect light and colored carpets change the color of the reflected light. Most studio opt for a smooth concrete floor that is painted matte black on a regular basis. Perhaps once every two years. Think 'Black Box Theater' here at COS.
The television studio originally did not have any carpeting. The carpet was installed as a temporary requirement during the studios use as administrative offices. The current carpet was never glued to the floor since it was to be lifted after the space reverted back to it's television studio function. That was many years ago. It's time to bring the floor back to life.
Curtains
Actions:
- Take down existing three curtains
- Purchase two curtains ( blank & grey ) with ample width
- Reuse existing hardware.
- Install additional hardware to allow curtains to smoothly go round the bend.
Background:
The television studio has three colored curtains that were installed in the studio after it was built. The colors are very saturated which means that they are difficult to light.
Modern studio designs all for two curtains. One black and one medium gray. The black curtain will not show up on camera providing that no light direct or reflected falls on them. This is a highly desirable classic television look. The grey curtain can be made to have any color simply by placing filters on the lights you use to illuminate them with.
Lights
Actions:
- Purchase four ellipsoidal reflector spotlights
- Acquire a good selection of metal gobos to change the pattern of the light.
- Purchase four soft boxes and stands.
The television studio are a great set of lights in full working over. They are a combination of scopes and fresnels. Missing from the setup and some ellipsoidal reflector spotlights and some foot lights.
Chroma Key / Retroreflector Surface
Actions:
- Remove existing temporary green screen and scenery flat.
- Build a flat surface against existing wall. Using sheet rock and mud.
- Paint chroma green (cheap) or cover with retroreflector material (less cheap)
- For retrorelector material use, purchase three LED lights for use with cameras.
Background:
Chroma keying continues to increase in popularity due to is versatility and decreasing cost. The studio current has a green fabric wall that's held to gather with map pins. This works yet it requires lots of maintenance and expertise to get a good key.
New technology developed by the BBC has revolutionised the industry. Retroreflector surface are make of very small transparent beads that reflect light back along the angle of incident. This is similar to reflective road signs and cat's eyes. These surfaces can be light by LED light operating at frequency's our sight the human visual range. To the video camera the light reflected from these surface takes on a 'perfect' uniform green. This allows for very high quality composites.
