December 20, 2010
Siskiyou Media Council presented four annual awards last week for significant contributions to the community’s public access channel, MCTV 15. Volunteer producer Arthur Aday was awarded MCTV 15’s Local Program Recognition Award during the recording of the 91st show he has produced for the public access channel since joining the organization as a producer in 2004. Under the titles of Arthur Talks and Aday in Telos, his shows have featured numerous local and international guests, many of them involved with the New Age spiritual community. Aday in Telos is seen both on Northland Cable Channel 15 and on the internet at mctv15.org at 8 a.m. on Tuesdays and at 6:30 p.m. on Fridays.
Noting that there was a significant drop in the number of local productions at the station during the summer and early fall of 2010, Brannon noted that the organization was particularly grateful for Aday’s efforts this year. “For several months this year yours were the only local shows produced in the MCTV 15 studio. Thank you so much, Arthur, for your steady support,” Brannon said as she presented Aday with his award.
SMC Operations Director Audra Gibson was awarded MCTV 15’s Outstanding Contribution Award in recognition of her work as executive director from 2008 until August 2010 as well as her critical role in helping the organization’s transition under Brannon’s new leadership. A charter member of the organization, Gibson served MCTV 15 and SMC as volunteer crew and producer, board member, board secretary and president and executive director before becoming the organization’s operations director in August. She is a central figure in studio production every Wednesday and continues to produce a “government roundtable” interview show titled Listen Up!
“Assuming leadership in an organization is a challenge under the best of circumstances. Audra’s generosity and responsiveness to me during this time – as well as her consistent support and her understanding of the organization ‘from the inside out’ – has made that task possible,” Brannon said.
SMC also recognized two College of the Siskiyous Media Communications students for Outstanding Volunteer Contributions to public access channel MCTV 15. Josh Hansen and Rory Owens were honored during the awards show produced during the final Media Communications 4 class of the year. Both Hansen and Owens served as crew members for MCTV 15 productions this year in addition to their Comm 4 production class work with COS adjunct instructor Ron Demele and Technical Specialist Kathy Blevins.
Hansen also received the Best Student Production Award from Demele and Blevins during the awards show. He is a second semester Communications major who commutes to the Weed campus from Yreka, where he lives with his wife and children. MCTV 15 is a division of the Siskiyou Media Council. Live Local Election Coverage
November 2, 2010
Election night 2010 was a big first for Siskiyou County. MCTV 15 had LIVE local election results cablecast from 8 PM until 11:30 PM.
We combined national election coverage with local coverage obtained the Siskiyou county clerk. The national feed was sourced from C-SPAN and Free Speech Television. These feeds were placed on the screen using picture and picture ( PIP ). The rest of the screen contained a scroll with local election result information. Periodically, Audra presented information about SMC and the election results to the viewing public. John Cumming from Silicon Sorcery provided volunteer media production support.
A summary will be available in the next 'The PSA Show'. This show continues to be available on video on demand since our first offering back in May, 2010
Brannon to head up Siskiyou Media Council
September 15, 2010
The Siskiyou Media Council (MCTV 15) welcomes Deborra Brannon as its new executive director. Under Brannon’s leadership, the organization plans to increase its engagement with a broader cross-section of the Siskiyou County citizenry and lay the fiscal groundwork necessary to insure that SMC continues to offer a wide range of services to the community.
Brannon brings many years’ small business experience and extensive leadership training to the SMC executive directorship. She also has a broad, general understanding and knowledge of Siskiyou County’s political, commercial, and social structure, gleaned through her work as a reporter for the Mount Shasta Herald and as managing editor for the Siskiyou Daily News.
Expanded programming content and citizen involvement are among the short-term goals Brannon will pursue. She believes firmly that everyone in the community – from doctors, handy-persons, school counselors, parents, and accountants to baristas, secretaries, small business owners, artists, and government officials – has something of value to share with the community. Local public access television station MCTV 15, according to Brannon, can play a key role in those community-wide conversations and learning opportunities.
SMC’s new executive director also plans to maximize sponsorship and underwriting opportunities. She feels certain that as MCTV 15 programming content increases and diversifies, local area businesses and organizations will find that their support for such programming makes a real difference in the lives of their customers and clients.
Former SMC executive director Audra Gibson, whose energy, effort, and spirit have long been associated with MCTV 15, has assumed the newly created role of director of operations for the organization. She will oversee operations and production work in the television studio, remain a key figure in the development and organization of PROPS business opportunities, and provide administrative support for the executive director. Kathy Blevins will continue her work for SMC as programming director for MCTV 15 and also her work for the College of the Siskiyous as class assistant to instructor Ron Demele in the Media Technology department. John Cumming will continue to serve as the Siskiyou Media Council’s volunteer technical director.
Siskiyou Media Council is the 501(c)3 non-profit entity originally incorporated as MCTV 15 in 2001. The name of the organization was changed in 2007, and SMC now runs south Siskiyou County’s public access television station (MCTV 15) and a video production service, Professional Production Services (PROPS), as subsidiary projects. The SMC board of directors meets in the MCTV 15 television studio on the College of the Siskiyous’ Weed campus on the first Tuesday of every month at 9:00 a.m. Public attendance is encouraged.
All questions, ideas, and requests for information may be sent to info@siskiyoumediacouncil.org. Anyone wishing to correspond directly with executive director Deborra Brannon may contact her at dbrannon@siskiyoumediacouncil.org.
